Abstract
The circular economy is an economic and industrial system that seeks to eliminate waste and facilitate the continual use of resources. This regenerative approach is in contrast to the traditional linear economy which employs a “take, make, dispose” model of production. Considering the looming climate crisis and degradation of the earth’s resources, research on the circular economy will be necessary. In particular, research from the perspective of the consumer. Two circular behaviours were chosen to be examined; purchasing refurbished products and participating in the sharing economy. An online survey was conducted (N = 112) in order to establish how consumers react to refurbished products and the sharing economy. In particular product-related factors were analysed. It was hypothesized that participants will have a lower intention to purchase items with a high degree of bodily intimacy and participants will have lower intentions to engage in sharing for products with a high utilization rate. Results of this study confirm these hypotheses. Furthermore, a number of other factors were also determined. Convenience, trust, affordability and sustainability were important for participation in the sharing economy. Product quality, affordability and sustainability were important for purchasing refurbished products.
